A Jaguar-badged family SUV seemed sacrilegious when the firm first announced it &ndash; leave the off-roaders to Land Rover, critics said, and concentrate on your saloons and sports cars. Years on, and the F-Pace has been a success and a money-spinner for the brand, and one of its most popular models. Mechanically it's very similar to the likes of the Range Rover Velar as well as the XF saloon, sharing their engines and aluminium framework. The F-Pace was conceived along similar lines to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio &ndash; to bring a brand known for its commitment to dynamics into the SUV age with a crossover that puts driving pleasure above everything else. Of course, to many people a great driving experience matters less than practicality, equipment or finance packages, and so the F-Pace has competition from all kinds of premium SUVs &ndash; from the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3 and Audi Q5 to the home-grown Range Rover Velar.The F-Pace range is extensive, with Jaguar offering three petrol engines, two diesels and a plug-in hybrid across a range of trim levels. At the top of the range sits the Jaguar F-Pace SVR &ndash; a hot version powered by a ballistic 5.0-litre V8 engine, rivalling cars such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and the Porsche Macan GTS. Relatively recently updated to keep its interior looking fresh next to its rivals, the F-Pace remains strong competition if sometimes overlooked in favour of the German brands. But should you buy one? Read our review to find out.The Jaguar F-Pace has been built with practicality in mind, and it shows. It has a huge 650-litre boot accessed via a standard powered tailgate and rear seats that fold almost (but not quite) flat in a 40:20:40 split, which means you're able to load longer items of up to 1.8 metres into the car. A pair of skis shouldn't be an issue, for example. Its loadspace expands to a total of 1740 litres with the rear seats folded, while the boot floor is reversible and rubberised on one side for easy cleaning after loading sports equipment or pets. Otherwise it's a nice, deep load bay that's bigger than you'll find in the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 rivals, which is great if you're carrying anything chunky. The only niggles we'd have are that the powered tailgate can be slow (if you're impatient) and the loading lip is comparatively high when lined up next to its rivals. Major medium van rivals for the Transit Custom include the Volkswagen Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic and Mercedes-Benz Vito.The 2018 facelift resolved issues with small, fiddly buttons and limited storage space with a full interior redesign. It brought about class-leading amounts of in-cab storage and updated infotainment options.On top of this, the 2018 refresh brought a new front-end design with a high-mounted three-bar grille and slim headlights with distinctive LED daytime-running lights on most models.There's a school of thought that suggests it shouldn't really matter what a van is like to drive &ndash; since carrying stuff in the back with as little fuss as possible is the primary purpose of any LCV. But ask Transit Custom owners and operators, and they'll all tell you that one of the things they like the most about Ford's medium van is how good it feels from behind the wheel.There was nothing particularly wrong with the performance of the older 2.2-litre units, so if you're considering one of those don't be concerned. But the newer 2.0-litre motors develop more torque much earlier, so feel more energetic and smoother while also being quieter. Most buyers go for the middle power output &ndash; so the 125hp 2.2-litre or the 130hp 2.0-litre &ndash; but if you can afford a punchier model with either 155hp (2.2-litre), 170hp or 185hp (2.0-litre) you won't regret it. The less potent 100hp and 105hp models will cope with their stated weights ok, but expect them to be slow and thirstier for fuel when fully laden. Alongside the addition of the 185hp engine, late 2019 also saw the introduction of mild hybrid (mHEV) technology. This EcoBlue Hybrid system is available as an option on select models as means of further improving fuel economy.The manual gearbox Ford fits as standard on all Transit Customs works just fine for a van. In fact, the most recent examples we've driven have been almost car-like in their precision. Earlier ones have felt vaguer, but not so much so that you need a compass to find the next ratio.
