In a world crammed with fashionable SUVs and dazzling electric cars, it's good to know that Audi continues to produce a solid petrol or diesel powered midsize estate car &ndash; the Audi A4 Avant. Honed to perfection over several generations, it's a go-to load lugger favoured by those who need a no-nonsense, long-distance cruiser packed with the latest tech. Here, we're discussing the sixth-generation A4 Avant. Launched in 2015, its been updated with refreshed styling and the latest tech several times since. But it will be replaced in late 2024 by the all-new Audi A5 Avant &ndash; the A4 name will continue, but on a new family of electric cars. We've tested many examples of the existing A4 Avant, covering thousands of miles and every possible use. The A4 Avant had over a dozen rivals when it was launched but the popularity of SUVs means just a few remain. The latest BMW 3 Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate are extremely strong opposition, and there's deeply talented cars from more mainstream brands including the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat. So Audi's old stager needs to be good to attract buyers.Over the years, the A4 Avant has been available with a bewildering array of petrol and diesel engines, ranging in power from 136hp to 286hp. There are no hybrid models. We're also covering the high performance S4 model in this review; there are petrol and diesel versions, both with around 350hp. Our specs pages show 10 well-equipped trim levels have been available across the A4 and S4 Avants. On top of all that, there's also the 450hp RS4 Avant, the rugged A4 Allroad and the A4 saloon range that we've reviewed separately. In short, there should be a version of the A4 Avant to suit pretty much anyone in the market for a biggish estate car.The Audi A4 Avant is pretty generously spacious, certainly enough for the average family of four to feel well accommodated. Even our tallest testers found ample front seat head, leg and shoulder room. The doors open wide, as well, which can be helpful if you have mobility issues. It's a similar picture in the back. Again, our six-foot testers could sit perfectly comfortably behind someone of similar height, with a bit of extra room to spread out. There are three seatbelts in the back, but the middle seat passenger will feel decidedly squeezed. And the roof line is quite low, which can be an issue if you need to lift children in and out of the car.Raising the A4 Avant's powered tailgate reveals 495 litres of beautifully trimmed boot space &ndash; we found watching the load cover slide automatically out of the way is oddly compelling. The space is a good square shape the floor is completely flat, which makes loading easier. And it's right between the car's main rivals for space &ndash; the Mercedes C-Class has 490 litres, the BMW 3 Series has 500 litres. But there's the ever-present spectre of the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat estates, both of which have a whopping 690 litres of boot space. Check our website for more stock. The Tesla Model 3 has made quite an impact and is now a common sight on our roads as the take up of electric cars really accelerates. It brings Tesla's innovative battery and motor technology to a more affordable end of the market, having been revised for 2024 and available for a much lower price than before. The Model 3 has been tempting many of you out of your conventional piston-engined executive cars, and into the world of EV ownership. And that's why it won the overall car of the year title in the 2020 Parkers New Car Awards, and is still a front-running EV today. Tesla's 'Project Highland' update brings a facelifted front end, better aerodynamics for a better battery range, lower noise levels, and a revised interior with better quality finishes than before and an (even more) simplified cockpit layout. The revisions can't come a moment too soon. Although the Model 3's still competitive, the arrival of new rivals such as the Polestar 2, BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BYD Seal, mean that the innovative car maker was right not to be too complacent.The Model 3 currently has a very simple layout &ndash; you can buy it in Rear Wheel Drive (344-mile range) and Long Range (421 miles) forms with a limited set of options and configurations. The main add-ons are around its self-driving capability, although Basic Autopilot comes with all models. Other standard features are over the air updates for its operating system, Sentry Mode &ndash; security system that activates the cameras if the car is disturbed while it's locked &ndash; is included, as is the excellent Tesla mobile app. The Model 3 is aggressively priced, especially in entry-level Rear Wheel Drive form, but the range-topping Long Range Model also undercuts its rivals. The old Performance model is no longer available, although it's likely to return in 2024 once sales of the updated model get up to speed. The original went on sale in 2018, and was mildly updated a number of times, with a series of tweaks in late 2021 before the facelift in 2023. In use, a Tesla Model 3 shouldn't offer up too many anxieties around its range. When the battery runs low, the sat-nav automatically diverts the car to the nearest available Tesla Supercharger.
