When it comes to seven-seat cars very few can claim to carry that many people and do it with ease. The smallest seats at the back of this type of vehicle are usually only fit for a small child or an adult willing to endure a squishy journey. The new Alhambra though &ndash; like its predecessor &ndash; really can carry seven in comfort. Throw in an incredibly quick and easy system for folding the seats and you have a functional and practical people carrier. It comes with plenty of kit as standard and along with decent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions it offers good value for money. It has some tough competition in the battle of seven-seaters, including the near-identical Volkswagen Sharan, as well as the Ford Galaxy. In 2011 an entry-level 2.0-litre diesel two-wheel drive model was added to the range. It has an output of 115bhp and responsive 280Nm of pulling power.This Alhambra has a stiffer chassis than the previous model making it safer than before and was awarded the top score of five stars in the Euro NCAP tests. Safety kit includes seven airbags as standard &ndash; including driver's knee airbag. All models also come with stability control as standard, ISOFIX mounting points and electric child locks for the sliding doors. This is where the Alhambra really shines. Even with all seven seats in place there is 267 litres of space available in the boot, which easily allows for two suitcases or even a buggy in the back. But drop the two rear seats and the boot size expands to an impressive 809 litres of space. Fold down the rear and second row of seats and there's a mammoth 2297 litres of on offer. The seats are incredibly easy and quick to fold down and can be operated with just one hand. Both the rear two seats and the second row of three seats can all be folded completely flat. Electrically operated sliding doors and an electrically operated boot are also available.With the use Volkswagen Group materials, the inside feels sturdy and robust as well as having a more stylish and premium feel than the previous model. The quality cloth seats and ambient red lighting make the cabin a comfortable environment to be in. Higher-spec models get electric front seating, which along with reach-and-height adjustable steering, means drivers will be able to find a good driving position without any problem. Unlike some seven-seat cars there is enough space in the two rear seats for an adult to sit quite comfortably and if you happen to be a little taller the second row of seats can also slide backwards and forwards to allow more room in the rear-most seat. As such an adult can travel quite happily in the back for a couple of hours. The seats are all comfortable and the driver's seat is cosseting enough for longer journeys and for keeping the driver comfortable and secure when going round tight bends.
