They're a clever lot at Audi. While the original 1998 Audi TT Type 8N was an excellent all-rounder, its curvy design began to look a little dated as time passed. And the fact that it sat on a Golf MkIV chassis would always compromise dynamics. For its predecessor, the 8J, they added sharper angles, while retaining the same basic silhouette, then perched it on the bang-up-to-date Volkswagen A5 PQ35 platform.It was enough to get closer to rivals such as the Volkswagen Scirocco, Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4 But here's the ingenious bit: they created a bespoke aluminium and steel space frame, giving it an alloy front and a steel rear, resulting in near-neutral front-rear weight distribution. The fact that it was five inches longer and three inches wider also helped, of course. The TT comes with electronic stability control, which can correct the cars line during a skid, as standard. Audi TT Coupe safety is enhancedby front and side airbags and a head restraint system that helps prevent whiplash injury. Isofix child seat mountings for the rear seats are offered as an option, as is a tyre pressure monitoring system. The TT is a two-plus-two seater but a bit more generous than before. The rear seats are best suited to children, but teenagers would probably be happy using them too. The boot is 20 litres larger than in the old model with 290 litres in total – plus the space with the rear seats folded has also increased by 20 litres. The glove compartment offers decent storage and there are a couple of other cubbyholes and useful pockets in the car.
